DistroKid’s migration guidance recommends using the same audio, titles and ISRCs when moving an existing release. It also notes that preservation of playlist positions and play counts cannot be guaranteed.
Why the distinction matters
Moving distributors can affect storefront links, reporting calendars and which company receives later payments. It does not automatically transfer publishing ownership or register compositions with rights organizations. A brief period of duplicated releases may occur during the handoff.
Checklist for creators
Export historical accounting, artwork, audio masters, UPC and ISRC numbers, release dates, ownership documents and playlist links before a switch. Coordinate delivery and takedowns carefully, and maintain records of which distributor controlled each accounting period.
