Samples, Remixes and Rights Clearance Before You Distribute

Sampling another recording can implicate the sound recording and the composition. A remix may involve additional permissions depending on what source material and protected expression it uses.

Why the distinction matters

Neither giving credit nor using only a short audio excerpt automatically grants permission. A distributor’s acceptance of an upload is not a warranty that every sample, interpolation or derivative use has been cleared.

Checklist for creators

Identify every borrowed recording and musical element. Obtain written permissions from the relevant master owner and publishing owners when required. Record allowed territories, platforms, term, fees, royalty shares and any approved edits before releasing.
