An International Standard Recording Code identifies a particular recording. It is not a copyright registration, and it is not the same as an identifier for a musical composition.
Why the distinction matters
DistroKid states that an ISRC is locked after upload; changing an incorrect code can require removing and re-uploading a release. Reusing an identifier for materially different recordings can create conflicts, while changing codes unnecessarily can break continuity in reporting.
Checklist for creators
Keep a master recording inventory that includes each version, mix and edit, title, performer, recording owner and associated ISRC. Coordinate identifiers across release distributors and match each recording to its correct underlying composition.
