A digital distributor delivers eligible recordings to streaming services and manages the recording-side delivery and payment relationship. Music publishing administration concerns the underlying compositions, writer and publisher information, and applicable publishing royalties.
Why the distinction matters
A single song can generate rights-based income streams involving different parties. Receiving a distributor payout does not prove that composition registrations, performance royalties or mechanical matches are complete. Some distributors offer optional administration products; compare contracts before assuming which rights are included.
Checklist for creators
Keep a ledger with the distributor, recording owner, ISRC, songwriters, publisher, composition identifier and administrator. Read every agreement for territory, percentage, collection scope and termination rights. Avoid entering contradictory ownership splits in different systems.
