Can You Register an Entire Album’s Copyright in One Application?

The U.S. Copyright Office provides group registration options for qualifying musical works from an album and a separate option for qualifying sound recordings from an album.

How the rights and registrations work

The categories are not interchangeable: an album’s musical works and its sound recordings must use the appropriate procedures. The Office also imposes eligibility, authorship, publication and numerical requirements that must be checked for each planned filing.

What a rights holder should do

Prepare a spreadsheet showing track names, authors, publication details, ownership and claimed material. Confirm the proper application and rules with the Copyright Office before treating an album as a single copyright claim.
